The Traditional Photographic Process

Known as chromogenic printing, this process is a nod to the classic, darkroom-style, photographic printing method.

The key to this process is the Fuji Crystal Archive photo paper itself, which is treated with a mixture of light-sensitive silver crystals. A Noritsu or Chromira printer uses lasers or LEDs to project your image onto the treated paper, causing the silver halide mixture to form your image. For color images, three layers of cyan, magenta, and yellow combine to form a brilliant, full-color print. The exposed paper is then run through the RA-4 chemical process to produce the final image.

This process is extremely accurate and reliable, which is why it’s often associated with higher-end, professional printing services. Chromogenic prints (a.k.a. c-prints) should hold their original quality for 60 years in normal lighting conditions. As a bonus, because the image is essentially baked into the paper itself, these prints are both scratch and water resistant.

Your image will be printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Lustre paper. Vibrant and sharp, with vivid colors, brilliant whites, and rich blacks, its semi-gloss finish will show a small sheen, but not a full gloss.

Your photo print will be delivered to you unframed.

The Images

I've been designing and writing graphics software since 1974. To create each of the images on this site, I wrote an original computer program that draws colored shapes onto a conceptual canvas. The underlying software base has evolved, over time, into a highly specific (virtual) machine that builds extremely high resolution images. In addition, each image is the result of applying billions of tiny dots of color. A typical image takes about 24 hours to compute and save. While the highest quality, full resolution images are used for printing, the online images you see on this web site are much lower-resolution versions.
